Pulau Payar, Langkawi, Kedah

Pulau Payar is located south of Langkawi Island on the northern part of Straits of Melaka with the Andaman Sea on top. Getting to the island is easy, you can go down to the jetty where there are plenty of tour operators offering day trip packages or do what I did, purchase a day dive trip package. The journey to the island takes about an hour.

Most dive here are not greater than 14 metres and the main highlight would be the huge groupers. If you go slow enough, there are plenty of micro life such as the camel shrimp and nudibranch for you to take photos of. There are also a lot of lionfish around but the most fascinating is the moray eel. Could not believe how tame it was until my dive guide rubbed it’s!

On the surface, another amazing highlight on this island is swimming with black tip sharks at knee depth water. Once bread crump are thrown into the water, schools of sergeant fish swarmed to grab them while black tip swims in and out swiftly. The island is great for a day trip with the family though the water visibility is just about 3 metres average.

I have never seen this before, snorkeling with black tip sharks at knee depth water.
