Surroundings

Noted by many travelers, Kuching is surrounded by nature and some of the places are not even mentioned in any  guide books. To get to these places are just about an hour drive out of the city where a day trip is possible and be back to the city by night fall.

Primates

At Semonggoh sanctuary, you can watch orang utans during feeding session just about 50 ft away in the open. You will be amazed by their size and how much they are alike to human.

While on the other direction of the city is Bako National Park where the shy Proboscis monkey can be found. You should stay at least 2 nights to enjoy the trekking along fauna rich paths.

Caves

Two caves frequent by both local and foreigner are Fairy Cave and Wind Cave.

Fairy Cave, believes to be once home to many fairies is full of mystical stories which amazed visitors. The size of the cave is huge and there are alters at certain location making the visit more interesting.

Waterfalls

Chilling waters coming down from the mountains surrounded by the rainforest where one can feel in touch with mother nature are at the many great waterfalls surrounding Kuching.

It is estimated there is about 200 of them in Kuching district alone which is also the life source for many villages. I believe there are more as the one accounted for are those within reach from the village only.

Indian Temple

Back in the 1860s, the second White Rajah, Charles Brooke brought in 1,000 indian for tea and coffee planting on the hill slope of Mount Serapi. They brought along their Goddess and only in recent years, the temple was rediscovered.

The journey up to the temple is good for trekking and you get a mazing view of Kuching from there.

Rafflesia Flower

Measuring about 3ft across, the Rafflesia is the biggest known flower in the world. Blooming only once every 3 weeks, it produces a stinking smell that attracts insects. It is better to call the park office before making a trip up to the national park at Gunung(Mt.) Gading. This is also a wonderful place to spend a whole day hiking.

Satang Island

The island is the nearest one from Kuching city. You can go scuba diving or snorkeling around the island. There is also a turtle conservation facility where at times, baby turtles are kept before been release to the wild.

Day trip and overnight trip is possible but he accommodation facility is very basic.
